Horizontal composition where the painter recreates a landscape of La Mancha with two donkeys in the foreground and some figures in the background.
One of the most interesting aspects of this version of The donkeys is that the artist work process can be observed. A precise but simple pencil drawing is perceived on the cream colour canvas; after that, the important outlines the painter doesn’t want to lose are repainted in white oil, as seen in the donkeys and closer figures.
It is also remarkable that the elements of this painting are almost completed in a single brushstroke, with barely any modifications, showing his great light and colour control.
The painting is not signed.
This unfinished version is a copy of the one exhibited with the same name in the Provincial Museum of Ciudad Real and painted by the artist himself in 1932.
Donated by Julián López Torres on behalf of the painter’s family, 8.3.2010.
