year 1965
Graphite/Paper
33 x 24,5 cm
This graphite on paper work distanced from the most conventional motifs used by the artist. In the composition it is observed a field of Tomelloso with a bombo in the background to the left, a house to the right and some vines in perspective. However, when looking closer the foreground, it becomes more graphical and the branches, the vine leaves and the bunch of grapes are more descriptive than the rest of the composition.
The most curious part of this drawing is behind the foreground branch where a blurred silhouette of the Virgin of Las Viñas, patron saint of Tomelloso, is recognised. The backlight effect enhances the Virgin’s head and crown while there is a cross-shaped flash of light on Baby Jesus.
This work was ordered with the intention of being published in the local newspaper Luz de Tomelloso for the local festivities in 1965.
It is signed on the lower right corner as “A. López Torres 1965”.
Donated by his sisters Eulalia and Carmen López Torres in a public deed, 28.4.93.
